Gigs: Nurning @ Red Bull's R1NG2RAV3, Leeds

TMS Sound

Leeds, 9AM Saturday 21 November - over 8,000 tweets were sent out to clued-in punters and ravers from all across the UK in anticipation for a secret rave set to go down that very night. Location and lineup had been hush hush until then, except for a single recorded sound clip on their Soundcloud page that still remained illusive.

Set up by the innovators of nightlife, the Red Bull Music Academy is paying tribute to a bygone era of illegal raves inspired by the heyday of underground music and club culture. Hosting #0800R1NG2RAV3 - a full-fledged night of proper sound systems, lineup and secrecy. Oh, and it's entirely FREE.

Lending a visual arm to the Leeds edition of this series is TMS sister and multi-disciplinary artist, FROMPAMM also known as Suki Quasimodo behind the decks. Her collaboration with the Red Bull culture team brought forth a blazing set of graphics to accompanying music set in scene by the likes of Bok Bok, L-VIS 1990, Slimzee + AJ Tracey and Kowton.

Appropriately sheltered at Temple Works, a former flax mill that dates back to the Industrial Revolution, FROMPAMM's visual work filled the cracks of dilapidation with bleeding colour, shape and form. Check out more details and photos of how the night went down here.

Gear up for the next leg happening this Friday 4 December in London! Locations and line-ups will be revealed in true old-school fashion: on the day of the event, in response to tweeting the hashtag. More info here.

Shouts to our London fam for showing utmost support at last night’s “Credit to the Edit: Native Instruments x Boiler Room Session”!

Appropriately held at the Institute for Contemporary Arts (ICA), right in the heart of London, our very own Sarah Farina held her ground within the pillars of tomorrow’s modern cultural evolution. Effortlessly transcending riddims from all corners of the globe, travelling through musical genres - Dub, Breaks, Beats etc. - layering sequences and constructing narratives using NI Stems.

A panel of visionaries joined the conversation of remixing and editing music through component sampling, illuminating the promising path of new creative digital techniques for performance, production and modular experimentation.

More than just a DJ/music journalist, dance music culture has an important contributing voice of tomorrow that is Greg Wilson. Relaying the concept of Stems through the operative generation of gamers or more precisely, the “Rock Band” gaming evolution and how it’s already encouraging the youth to create music with similar digital models. It’s good to have a balance of both worlds, that’s what progression looks like, whether in technology, discernment or idealism - watch his previous discussion on the instruments of sound alongside Hatcha, Clams Casino, Hermanos Pizarro and longstanding music journalist Joe Muggs (writer for the likes of Mixmag/The Wire/FACT/Guardian/Boiler Room etc.)

House music pioneer and early influencer to the organic dance music groove which became the evolution of Body & Soul, Francois K, compared his experience of using Stems to analog sampling in Dub music culture like tape recording, early machine output and other cut & paste methods for layering and bolstering sound.

He then brought us on a journey from Balearic/Hacienda sounds, pinched with native New York “Deep Space” House and ending the evening with big-room Techno.

Nothing like a Sunday dance and boogie with friends and family from across the globe to complete the week. Here’re a few photos of the night, if you also have some thoughts/photos of the night - tag/share/get in touch with us!

TMS Sound

Super proud to announce that Boiler Room and Native Instruments - two leading innovators shaping music production, performance, and perception - are joining forces to explore creative techniques that have inspired what electronic music is today.

To kick off the series, we're delving into the depths of remixing, re-arranging, and re-editing for the first topic: “Credit to the Edit”. Together we bring New York veteran François K, London’s prime tastemaker Benji B, and DJ and journalist Greg Wilson to look at the history and technological innovation behind editing and remixing. Topics will range from the early days of the 12” extended disco edit, through to new tools like the open Stems format, which is modernizing the age-old excitement of breathing new life into existing works. The panel will be live streamed from the ICA in London, along with showcase performances by François K himself, and Berlin bass ambassador Sarah Farina.

Viewers are encouraged to get involved by asking questions the chat room and via social media.

Family: Welcome Uta!

Sarah Farina

We're really proud to finally announce that one of the finest DJ's we know has joined our roster and her name is, UTA.

A long time Berlin DJ and radio presenter on notorious ex-pirate station TwenFM. She also co-runs the "Rec Room", a party series which has gained massive popularity among fans of UK-influenced bass music in Berlin. Unlike some other DJ's, Uta has always been a listener. Being part of the city’s underground scene since its heydey in the 1990s, she has become an expert in classic House and Techno. As a DJ, Uta knows how to rock a crowd with her killer technique and excellent taste. She is a proper old-school individualist who loves digging in second hand shops as well as checking the latest bits in House, Techno, UK Bass and judging them by her own ear."
